Chen, 76, loves to chit-chat with her friends at the local senior center. Originally from Fuzhou, China, Chen loved reading as well as playing with her friends after school. When she was 29, she lost her husband, the father to her four children. “Life in mainland China was harder than any challenge I’ve had here.” The oldest of her four children immigrated to the U.S. first, later on applying for her and the rest of their family to come. After two and a half years of being a seamstress, she took care of her grandchildren, “which was a full-time job in itself.” Today, she passes on her love of reading to her grandchildren by taking them to the library and reading to them daily.

“Taking care of my grandchildren… I don’t do it because I like it, I do it because it’s a necessity.”
