Qiu He Qing, 75, immigrated to New York in 1992 with his parents from Fuzhou, China. As a child, his favorite activity was to go hiking in the mountains of Fuzhou after school. Qiu now has three sons and nine grandsons. His passion for hiking manifests itself in different ways now. He loves physical activity, which includes walking in the park, exercising his arms and legs, or “anything that gets [his] blood flowing.” He enjoys watching other people play ping pong in the park as well as participating in some of the games himself. Before Qiu retired ten years ago, he was a house renovator, carpenter, and furniture maker for twenty three years. However, his retirement doesn’t stop him from getting his hands dirty. He routinely helps his friends and neighbors fix their household-carpenter needs, free of charge.

(Referring to carpentering for his friends) “Why would I charge anyone any money if it’s just something that I enjoy doing?”
