70-year-old Gina Young is an inspirational leader at the Tzu Chi Foundation’s Manhattan Service Center Food Pantry. She registers over 500 families for grocery distribution and leads the volunteers at every event. She immigrated to New York from Taiwan 53 years ago. As a child in Taiwan, she loved to go hiking in Jilong and she continues to fulfill her passion for hiking. Young went to night school to study English to propel her familiarization of New York, gracefully and diligently assimilating to the new environment despite language barriers and racial prejudice.

“I studied English, I began work, I started making friends, and eventually got used to the new surroundings.”
