On every third Saturday of the month, Pan Wenqiang is the first to arrive at the Tzu Chi food pantry distribution. Although the starting time of the distribution is at noon, Pan arrives three hours early, at nine. Every time, he exclaims, “我有第一名了!” I’m first place again! At nine, the volunteers are still just starting to set up. Pan often patiently sits on a nearby fire hydrant, watching us move the tents and pack vegetables. The volunteers remind him that arriving early is completely unnecessary, for his portion of groceries doesn’t change no matter how early he is. Still, week after week, Pan expectantly shows up at nine, spending the next three hours watching the volunteers work.

“I woke up at dawn, so I decided that there is no harm in coming a couple of hours early.”
