Connie Li, 69, is originally from Guangzhou; her first language was Cantonese. However, she learned how to speak Mandarin on her own from singing karaoke and watching television shows. Li’s favorite activity is drinking tea with her friends and traveling with her family. Her current favorite place to visit is Hong Kong, where her extended family and friends are. Li worked at a clothing store for 15 years. However, for the two years after she stopped working at the clothing store, she worked as a Kindergarten after-school teacher, where she helps five to six-year-old kids do their homework. “The kids were so funny and I loved my job.” She officially retired after her grandson was born, starting to take care of him full time.

“The kindergarteners made fun of my accent, but I always thought they were so funny, very straight-forward and energetic.”
